A friend of mine and his wife have acquired two Mallard duck chicks after their mother got killed by a car. Their three young sons are having a great time raising these ducks and have pretty much taken over the two car garage as a duck park. As the ducks are now much bigger they are thinking that maybe the duck raising could e a summer project. I happened to think that maybe some motivation to keep their interest up would be showing the ducks at the local county fair in August. Does 4 H allow display/judging of Mallards or do they have to be like speciality ducks?

Here in mass, as long as the animals were raised by the exhibitor, and the child is a 4-H member, they are allowed to show their animals. Also if it's an animal that was bought, sold or traded, the animal has to be in the child's posession by june 1st. But that's our regulations here, I second Tweeza's post about contacting the local 4-H branch. They'd be more than willing to assist you in any issues you may have.

In my county, we can show ANY breed or mixed breed of duck we'd like. The options are: Pekin OR Other, with no limitations on what the "Other" breed can be.

And it doesn't matter here how long the animal has been in the child's possession, as long as they know how to handle it during showing.

So the regulations vary pretty widely depending on where you live I guess!
