4h Turkeys

Breed, of course, plays a role. Our county has a farm that provides free turkey poults to the 4- h kids if you request in advance, so most turkeys come from this source, but not all.

making sure you stay within the rule book. Our family has not shown turkeys or meat birds in 4H (we show chickens), but make sure there isn’t a particular weight cap, as there is one for meat birds.

I’ve seen very particular info on feeding a very high protein for x weeks (or days..it isn’t too long), then dropping it down a bit at a certain point. But turkey do need fairly high protein. My kid and I attended a poultry info day specifically for 4-H kids at Ohio state AG school, where they went over all kinds of poultry and feeding, housing, and included a chicken necropsy experience for everyone. So, look at the state 4-h website to see if similar in your area. Call the county 4-H office, which you already must be in contact with. They may be able to give you some info.

good luck.
