Big stone gap, va
Hey guys! I need your help, once again.
I have around 40(ish) free range chickens.
I have a group of 4 chicks that are around 4-5 months old.
I was giving out snacks yesterday and (I didn’t see it, but heard) one of my big chickens trample one of the babies.
The baby flopped over the side of the bank. I went and got her.
Her right leg is just dangling. I’m not sure if her leg is dislocated or it’s her hip. If you stand her up, she will not even acknowledge that leg. I have put her in the injury ward (my basement in a cage)
I’m not sure what do to.
I was going to make her a sling to stand in.
But will she recover? Should I cull her?

I would rather try to help her. She is the granddaughter of one of my beloved Roos that is no longer with us.

Sorry that no one answered you earlier. Sorry about your injured pullet. It sounds like a broken or dislocated leg. Is a vet an option to get an xray and treat the leg? Is the skin open and bleeding anywhere on the leg, or is the leg deformed? Is the leg dangling from the hip or the knee? I would isolate the chick near food and water. A sling would be good, but make sure that she doesn’t fight to get out of it and risk hurting herself more. Pictures may help. I hope that you can help the little pullet. Here is a good article about splinting each bone, a picture of the bird skeleton and advice on splinting:

Here is a good link on chicken slings and chairs:

A vet is not an option right now.
I tried a sling, but wondered if it was causing her dangling leg more harm than good.
Then I tried a splint. That seemed painful for her.
I think the break is above her elbow, in that vicinity.

This is what I ended up doing last night. She prefers to lay on her side.
This is just for support to keep her leg elevated and straight.

If the leg is broken, it can take several weeks of splinting or rest for a callas to form. A callas is a thickening of the the bones where they have joined back together. Here is a good video with splinting basics:

I’m concerned that she still isn’t acknowledging that leg.
She will not put any pressure on it at all.
She doesn’t seem to be in any pain. I get her up and out of the cage 3 times a day. Stand her up and let her drink and eat. And she will try to hop around on her good leg.
Here is the leg today.
Any idea if she will start to move it?
