My 2 week old serama chicks suddenly fell over and died after I fed and watered them today.

I have them in my utility room outside. It’s plenty warm in there and they have their brooder plate plus extra room to get out of the way if they need to get out of the heat. I am feeding them purina chick grower crumble and they have fresh water.

they have been healthy and active little guys, nothing wrong with them. They were fine even as I went to feed them and refresh their water. They have been absolutely fine which is why I’m so floored.

I fed them and they happily ate. I fed the rest of my crew outside and came back to change bedding in their brooder and noticed two of them laid over on their sides breathing rapidly and eyes closed. I checked under the brooder and saw two more on their sides flailing around. As they looked like they were struggling to breathe I sat them upright and kept checking on them but they continued to die. I currently have one that is still alive. It presented like the rest of them, fell over cheeping, flailing, couldn’t stand, had a hard time holding its head up, quickly blinking its eyes. But it seems to have recovered and is up and running around normally now. The others are all gone.

I am so upset! I don’t know what happened, it’s almost like they all were poisoned since they all started dying all at once but I don’t know how that would even happen.

Any ideas?? This has been such a crazy day.

I'm sorry, that is awful. Any possible exposure to toxic substances like Teflon or car/furnace exhaust?
Thank you, and no they’ve not been exposed to anything. It is possible that they went into shock from fresh water as the other commenter mentioned but beyond that I’ve got no clue 😩

Oh I am so sorry. Big hugs. If nothing else changed in the routine, shock could be the culprit. Hoping the survivor hangs tough!
