I bought four 5 week old child on Saturday and two 5 day old chicks today. One of the 5 week olds is hammering the poor little guys. I assume this is normal, but wanted to see if they should be separated.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I would separate them. I keep my chicks in a 45 gallon tote box in the house until they are 2-3 weeks old (after that age they are big enough to fly out of the tote), then I move them in with the others in the coop. They are big enough to "peck" for themselves at that age, usually.

Plus, if they aren't feathered out well, then I put a heat lamp on them at night in case they feel cold in the night air.

I agree I would keep them separated for awhile. When you do put them together, the bully may have to be moved too.

Thanks everyone. I separated them and they're doing fine. The bully andthree others are heading off to my mother in laws. The others stay with me and my other hens. So, plenty more reintroductions to come!
