If you want good egg layers - 5 large brown eggs per week, and friendly docile birds, especially if you have children, then you can beat buff orpingtons.

1 Barred Rock
1 Gold/Silver Laced Wyandotte
1 Buff Orpington
1 Speckled Sussex
1 Red Star or Australorp (lay a lot of eggs)

Your kids would LOVE the easter eggers and your choice pretty blue or green eggs and different shades too, I think Ive even seen a few pink eggs in here. , Im partial to the austrlorps. they lay eggs even in january 8 hens dropped to 4 eggs for a couple days here and there but bounced right back up to 7 and 8 eggs. But they are all nice breeds. The sussex are beautiful out on a green lawn in the summer. My mother has a black star hen 12 years old and lays an egg every day, nice one too, they are a great choice.
