3 chicks hatched recently from the 9 our hen was sitting on. They are all healthy chicks so far, but one day as we were moving them to a safer location because the chicks kept jumping out without their mother, I noticed a chick had 5 toes. It really freaked me out because I have never seen a 5 toed chicken as such. Did some research, came up with a list of breeds the chick would have to be. NONE of the chickens in our flock fit ANY of the breeds!!:idunnoNo other chicken in our flock has 5 toes either. Additionally, this chick has 5 toes on BOTH legs. I am so confused. This is just a deformation then, right?

Can you list any potential parents of the chicks you own? And maybe add pictures of your chick, & potential parent birds?

Polydactly can pop up in any breed, since it's a genetic mutation of the digits.

I only have 5 chickens, 4 hens and 1 rooster. The rooster is a Jersey Giant, and the egg it might've hatched from came from either a Cinnamon Queen, a White Leghorn, or a Red Shaver. We did not add any eggs from the last hen. I'll go out to get the picture of the chick right now.

I'm not sure how good the quality of this is. the right foot is pretty blurry, but the left foot has the visible 5th toe

All lay brown eggs, except the White Leghorn hen. I never heard of a Red Shaver.

Chick has black legs, & feet. Yep, has five toes.

Do you have pictures of your parent birds? Just want to confirm breeds.

Are you sure it's not got any hidden silkie.
I don't know much about genetics but even if the parents aren't silkie the 5-toe gene can be passed down from (great)grandparent birds.
Not sure if this is right

I'll try to get pictures tomorrow or soon, I might have to go out soon for the rest of the night. You're right, I may be wrong about some of the breeds. We got them from a farm and the farmer couldn't tell us every breed, so we found all their breeds through research. "brown chicken with white spots on back" on google, etc 😂. But the list of chicken breeds with 5 toes didn't look remotely like any of our birds.

Hmm. I know the hens definitely dont have any silkie blood in them, but you may be right about the roosters side! I have no clue about him though 😂😅
