I really don’t want this to be my second post here, but we messed up and my mum’s old little dog slipped in while I was cleaning the brooder and grabbed my 5 week old bantam mix (thankfully this dog is almost toothless). This happened about 36 hours ago.

The bantam was let go of immediately and had no punctures, scratches. She was limping and avoiding standing up. I looked up what to do, and isolated her from the flock in her own box. With the affected leg, here is no break that I could feel/see, no wounds, no swelling or bruising of the skin. She was grabbed on the thigh/knee area, feathers there were wet with dog saliva.

She’s been kept in her own box in the warmest room in the house, with some warm water jars. She’s near fully feathered, but seems to appreciate it. Over the past 24 hours I have given her water with electrolytes and dissolved aspirin (300mg to 1gallon). Her stools have come up with no signs of blood. She’s perked up a lot since, chatters to me and to peck around for food, and appears to be more confident with standing. She calls when she is lonely and clearly wants to be around the flock, but she’s not going back until her leg is better.

But my main concern right now is that she won’t eat or drink unless I offer it in a spoon. I understand that she might not want to because of potential pain. She’s still a growing chick, how detrimental would it be for her to be eating so little for this period of time? Is there any point that I should syringe feed her wet food? Her most recent stools have very little solid matter in them.

If there’s anything you think I should change or do, please let me know!

I was afraid that might be the case- though I do have a happy update! I couldn't update sooner because I was having trouble logging in here (all fixed now).

She's doing a lot better, and is eating and drinking normally- she still has a slight limp, but very much reduced. But so far so good, I think she's on the mend now. I will need to worry about reintroducing her back to the flock at some point. I'm so glad that she's getting better, this girl is kind of my favorite of the flock.

And here's probably my final update for this specific situation:

She's walking normally with no limping now! I introduced her back to the flock today by letting them all together for a big dust bath while I cleaned out their brooder. They actually seem more peaceful now that I've returned her? The two cockerels we have were squabbling a lot more in the week she was gone. In any case, I'm so glad that it turned out to be nothing worse and that she made such a smooth recovery after those couple days.

I'd say feed her like you were planning but possibly more nutritional contents? That would require more research but I once had an injured pullet and to me it seemed like she was a bit smaller than the rest after a bit of time past. However she ended up fine but just keep her comfortable. I let my youngin w her flock despite the injury I was just supervising a lil just in case. They'd be happier of course.

Just make sure it goes down the Right way when feeding her
