My nephew helped me pick out this Brown Leghorn a few weeks ago. He promptly named it Julie. He stroked her back until she fell asleep and loves to carry her around.

She is starting to grow a bit of a comb at five weeks. Do I need to tell my nephew that we are changing her name either to Julio or to BBQ?

Thanks!

Comb is still iffy though... usually leghorn roos have a much larger comb at that point so there is still hope it could be a pullet.

Thanks. Thats what I was afraid of. Seems like out of five of my starter chickens three of them are leaning towards the masculine side of things!

One other thing I noticed to day is that the sides of her (his) neck, where I think the hackles should grow in are very bare. Almost like she has a mowhak neck. I'll try to get a good picture of that tomorrow.

I say pullet. I just sold my last Danish Brown Leghorn pullet yesterday. Most leghorns get a larger comb than other breeds, anyway, so "her" comb being that big is normal. And since just about all leghorns are flighty/skittish, their stance tends to be upwards/tall, too. Just my experience with them.

Looks just like my brown leghorn pullet did. Seems like my roo had a lot more black and gold on him. They almost looked like different birds!
