Just bought two (hopefully) hens to raise as pets. We have a Barred Rock and a Buff Orpington. At five weeks the Orpington has started to develope wattles while the Barred Rock does not. We aren't sure if it is just a difference between the two breeds or that our "she" is actually a "he". I'm really hoping it's a hen so we don't have to give it away :( being that we live in a neighborhood.
If anyone could give any information on this that would be great. here's a picture of the Buff Orpington:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but with a comb and wattles that large and red at only 5 weeks, your Buff Orpington is a cockerel. :o(

I have a 7 week old buff Orpington pullet that had no red and no developing wattle. Looks like a cockerels to me.

Our 12 week old Buff Orpington doesn't have a comb or wattles this big or red yet. Going to have to go with cockerel.

Thanks everyone. It's sad news but I knew it was a possiblity. I guess I'll have to find a farm for him to live on :(
