...above the right shoulder, 5 week old chick has a lump that is almost the size of a ping pong ball , part of it is bald , yellow looking , firm . Looks like possibly an abcess . Thinking about trying to lance it to see if it is and would drain. Other possibilty could be a tumor? Would a chick this young have a tumor? If I did try to lance , drain , what would do to keep it clean after ? She is a hen chickie so i hesitate to just cull her. She is active , alert , otherwise seems fine. Suggestions please???

I would try lancing and then use bluekote or bacitactin on it afterwards but would go for the blue-kote first since it is more drying.

Don't touch it. It might be nothing more than a ruptured air sac. Just keep an eye on it. If it continues to get bigger or doesn't dissipate then using a sterile needle on the end of a syringe to see if you get any fluid out of it. It could be something as simple as a hematoma.

You are the only one that can see it, all we can go on is what you describe.

It's not crop , it's on the back of the chicken at the shoulder joint...it's not a hematoma , wrong color ...what is a ruptured air sac?? It's firm (doesnt feel like just fluid, too firm ) , round, looks yellow under the skin and missing feathers at the site , ping pong ball sized , raised from surrounding skin .

Maybe it's just a fatty tumor/cyst type thing. Do they eat alot of corn or scratch grains? The guy at the feed store just told me the other day that high protein feeds and excess corn/scratch makes them get fatty tumors. I think they are harmless, just not very attractive but I don't know for sure.
