Hi,
I'm raising chickens for the first time. I received 5 rhode island red and 5 barred rock in the mail. They definitely got cold in the mail and I lost 1 barred after a few days. All had pasty butt which I cleared. In all but 1 it never came back. The 1 with a reoccurring dirty vent ( a barred) is now noticably smaller then all the others at 5 weeks. I noticed the size difference starting at 3 weeks old. They are on medicated starter feed. What can I do with the small one? He behaves normally but now he's starting to get pushed around because of his size.

Maybe separate him. It might just not be able to thrive for some reason. It could be some genetic thing or something. Just give him some special TLC. Get some poultry electrolytes for its water. I would separate it and the next smallest chick so the small one can have a buddy. I hope it gets better for you. Also, welcome to BYC!

Can you post some photos of the chick, his poop and of the other chicks as well?
Are they in a brooder? (photo) How much space do you have?

How much longer do you plan on feeding medicated starter?
I think I would give the chick poultry vitamins for several days in a row, then 1-2 times a week.
Sadly, sometimes a chick may have a genetic or developmental issue that appears as they get older. The chick may be failure to thrive. There's so many possibilities.

I would provide more space if it's cramped do the others don't push him around so much, if needed add another feed/water station - it really depends on how and where they are being kept.

I am new to raising chickens too and one of mine started showing signs of a weak left leg and isn't growing as fast as the others either but she is still getting new feathers and stuff. I made her a little box with food and water in it and set her on top of the brooder and she is doing well. She can look down and see the other chicks and hear them so when they are peeping, she is too. I call it her penthouse apartment. Hehe! I keep electrolytes in her water and also offer her wet food and she loves it!

At 5 weeks they need more space, likely this is why he's getting pushed around.
Do you have your coop/run ready for them to go outside?

There is a size difference, not much you can do but wait and see how the chick develops.
If he's being picked on, adding more space would be what I would do, I would not separate unless the others are attacking - a lone chick is lonely and they are harder to re-integrate later on.

The poops look fairly normal to me. The brown runny one is Cecal poop and the other is poop.
