I have 5 week old chicks and was wondering if I can put them outside in a heated coop with a run. There is a 4 ft ladder leading into coop. Are the chicks smart enought to realise if they are cold to go into the coop? I was going to add extra heater to keep the coop warmer then I usually do. Currently they are in my basement and doing fine. Just curious when i can put them outside safely.

thank you
Ryan

You might need to train them a bit. Put them in the coop first, with door shut. Then do not let them out for a day or so. Then you can open the door to the run and let them out. They'll come out if they want to.

Great question! Was wondering this myself!! I have them in coop with light.

was going to put them out but it was 19 this am so I will wait alittle longer. Just incase the power goes out or breaker trips, hate for them to freeze to death.
