One of our 5 year old hens has been holding herself like a penguin on and off the last month. She's has really green poop on and off. Today I went out to the coop and she was upstairs and unable to stand. When she does move, she's using both wings for balance. She's alert and devoured her favorite treat of yogurt.

I don't believe she's eggbound. She was attacked by a dog years ago and her egg laying all but stopped. She'll drop the occasional fairy egg, but nothing in the last 8 months.

All other hens are fine. What might the trouble be? Is she dying?

She could have a reproductive disorder, such as salpingitis where lash egg material is deposited into the abdomen, or egg yolk peritonitis. That can make them stand like a penguin or waddle, or walk more upright, and prefer to sit for long periods. Do you have any pictures of her? You probably should keep her in a pen or crate with food and water close to her with reach. I would mix a little chicken feed, a lot of water, scrambled egg and alternate with tuna, canned cat food, or ground meat, and offer that from a small bowl held up to her beak. It wouldn’t hurt to give some Poultry NutriDrench 2 ml daily for a boost. Some try amoxicillin orally 250 mg twice a day for 10 days, in case of an infection. Aqua Mox is found online.

Thanks. We've isolated her to our sick bay and will work to try the Aqua Mox and NutriDrench + the suggested food support.

She might have good days and bad days. Many hens as bad off as she is, still love to be out with their flocks in the fresh air, even if they are just lying around. If I notice they are developing a problem with their crop not emptying, or if the other chickens start pecking them, I consider putting them down, or at least separating in a dog crate.

Update: Our girl is still in sick bay, but is now standing and walking normally. I am concerned about her poops though. Looks a bit like green tomatillo sauce. She's eating normally. She's not had any plants, etc. Just her pellets lately. Possible coccidiosis?

What do you make of these poops?
