5-year Old Hand-rearing an Orphaned Chick and Learning from It

My daughter is teaching me her time measurement system. I told her to stay with Ty until he says he is ready to go to roost. Daughter appears to now know the subtle behaviors he produces indicating he is interested in going to sleep. Kids pick up on that pretty quick. Being impatient I instructed her stop playing with dolies and get his bucket ready. She said it is not time yet to be watching for it. I asked why and got an interesting stream. She said first toady (very large toad) comes out of hole by gutter and that does not happen until light bugs start to shine. She is using visual ques based on other species that appear to be pretty accurate.

Ty is also wanting to roost up complicating daughters efforts getting him penned.

Ty getting bigger. First to images from just before daughter got back after 2 weeks in Montana.

Black Rat Snake got entangled in deer netting for a second time. I relocated is by 75 yards yet it got tangled again within inches of the location it got caught in before. Daughter invested 15 minutes with scissors getting the snake freed.

Amazingly brave little girl.

We have strips in the orchard that have purposely spared the mower so vegetation would grow taller and serve as bio-attractor for insects the chickens like to eat. Daughter, dog, and two cockerels investigate.Juvenile cockerels are in the fescue shark stage of life.

The orchard is being managed to provide a more significant source of forage for the two cockerels and ultimately the hen that will hatch a brood in about two weeks. Grasshoppers are becoming extremely abundant and available.

Daughter and cockerels worked they area over looking for the choicest grasshoppers. Daughter found her first walking stick of the year in one of the strips.

She went to great lengths keeping the cockerels from eating her find.
