50 baby chicks, and what I've learned

One of my favorite parts of chicken ownership is seeing all their different personalities. In my group:

My NHRs, the friendliest group as chicks, are now the most standoffish. They still come around to see what I'm doing, and look for treats, but pretty much do whatever they want most of the time.

My BRs as a breed are the loudest, and the most collectively friendly. One likes to stand on my shoe and be petted, and attempted to fly onto my 3yo dd's shoulder the other day. She is very friendly, first always looking for treats and adventure. The other BR girls aren't far behind, and will follow me around the yard.

My RIR girls each are complete individuals. Peggy, my super squatter, always hangs around. Not crazy normally about petting (although she squats if I happen to walk too close, so it's hard to tell these days!), but likes to see what's up. Her sister RIR is a background chicken. Somewhat curious, somewhat friendly. Not overly much of either.

My favorite by far is my pullet Jane. She's a blue splash d'Anvers, and has been campaigning for house chicken status for quite some time. She hangs out in the coop henhouse with me in the mornings, loves to ride on my shoulder, adores being petted. The cock in the group was her mate, and he is 1lb of pure manliness ROTFLMAO! He struts so high sometimes that he walks on his tiptoes (reminds me of some sort of Stalin impersonator!).

My only chickens that are completely standoffish are the 3 silkie/americauna mixes. They were hatched under a hen, lived with her free range for three weeks before being given to me. They are the kids' favorites (two have silkie feathers), but no amount of holding has gotten them to even LIKE me. They won't come for treats unless I drop them and move back.

Love this topic. Thanks everyone for the personality insight!

Black Australorps: Very quiet shy birds, would stick to themselves and others of the same breed. Rearly would go outside when it was nice, and if they did, they'd go pretty much as a group. Not very outgoing or curious at all.

My 5 Rhode Island Reds are just like tyour Australorps but my 7 Dominiques are NOSEY!! Friendly, fight each other to get in my lap , curious, talkative and nosey as heck!! Did I mention spoiled rotten??!!

I love everyone's descriptions of their breeds' personalities !

It is so true how different they are, but if you try to explain it to a non-chicken person they think you are crazy.

Some breeds not mentioned:
Barnevelders - the most shy of my birds
Brahmas - in your face looking for food
Marans and Welsumers- stand offish
Buttercups & Spitzhaubens - want to see what is going on (do I have treats ?), but don't like to be touched or held
Brabanters - friendly and VERY curious. Mine remind me of cats.

Of course there are individual birds that just don't follow the same drummer as the rest of their breed

How about Lakenvelders (sp?)
Anyone have those? I have been wondering what their personalities are like

I don't know about them. I did realize, that I didn't post about my older girls.

I have 4 SLW's they are boring. No personality at all.

5 Red Stars they are great. Not necessarily the most friendly, but I didn't get them as little chicks either. But they are always busy and after me for treats. Oh, and don't wear red Croc's into the run, they will peck at your toes through the holes. Always coming into the coop when I'm collecting eggs and fluffying bedding to talk to me, or yell at me. I don't talk chicken yet, so I'm not sure.

1 Black Star - About the same as the red, but not as forceful

4 EEers- they are a bit stand offish, but I think they are pretty low in the pecking order. The talk a lot too, and will come see me in the coop. Probably just saying "leave my eggs alone, you big rooster!"
