5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

So we have had a busy day. We have 12 in the brooder now. 4 CCL sports, 2 CCL, 2 BCM, 1 RIR X EE, 1 RIR X production red, 1 Rhodebar, and oops I forgot the last one! Maybe another CCL. Some of my CCLs are super blue egg layers. So i am amazed that we have 4 of the sports because they are rare. They are SO cute! The Rhodebar came out with a swollen belly and fast respirations plus cord hanging on with a few drops of blood, but he is really perking up now. Once the cord dried I was able to snip it off. I caught one looking at its reflection in the water jar, so I gave them a mirror and they just love looking at themselves. LOL!

There hasn't been much activity in the bator since the last 5 came out, so we are going to a movie. I will post a photo with natural light when I get home.

Montana Dolphin I would consider stapleing or taping cardboard over the screen . if you cats and maybe the dog cant see in they might be less prone to try to get the chicks. most not all St Bernards will not hurt the chicks at all. age would be one factor if she is still puppy less than 18 months or so I would keep her away . good luck I know you will do well with them.

Here, if I brood chicks in the house, they are in the room where I keep the incubators and hatcher, with a door that closes, where cats are not allowed. This is the first year I've ever brooded in the house, I don't especially like it, but when I decided to hatch through winter I knew it was probably going to happen. I started to take them down to the crawl space, where I brooded last February and March, and DH wouldn't hear of it.

Works for me, way easier on my back!

The 3 in front are F2 OEs from my coop. The lighter colored one is a BBS Orpington…I'm afraid to assume splash as I want a splash in the WORST way! So I'm just going to hope it is!!

My fingers are crossed for you.

I am trying some d'uccles and phoenix eggs this time. Last hatch didn't work out for me. Wanting them pretty bad.

The Brown color is the last part of the egg laying process. A lot of us compare it to being painted by an inkjet printer.

That looks more like a chick sitter to me. I had 1 that tried to brood my chicks for me.
