Hi, I have 2 hybrids after losing 1 to a dog attack around 6 weeks ago, they are around 12 months old, they have a small coop which they have stopped sleeping in, it has been warmer here for the past week or so and they sleep on a perch in their run, not a problem if there happy I'm happy, every morning for the past 7days at 6:05, 1 of them makes a really loud noise and she won't be quiet until I go out to her, the other is happily laying an egg, up until the dog attack the run was left open and they could free range as and when they pleased, but now they are in their run until I am in the garden with them, so the past week I have been getting up and letting her out for an hour waiting for the other to finish laying then putting her back in run, but this morning she seen me through the kitchen window and stopped the noise so I left her shut in run and haven't heard her since,
Now my question is what is causing this crowing!! Is it because she doesn't like being on her own as the other is laying? Is it because she just wants to see me? Is it because she wants to get out of the run? The funny thing about that 1 is when I let her out she just follows me in the house and stays by my feet untill the other 1 comes out of the nest and calls to her then goes to her.
Can iI stop this somehow, really at the end of my tether and imI'm sure my neighbours are too!!!
Thank you in advance

Sounds like she is still stressed by the dog attack - she either wants you with her or the other hen - probably as security. Actually it would be best if both learned to roost in the coop - they would be safer, and the sound wouldn't carry as well if her doodle do was muffled by the closed coop.

Hi thanks for reply, I've had them since last September and both slept in coop no problem until recently, it is small and I don't like the thought of them locked in there, nothing can get into their run apart from the odd robin but they are quite happy being with them, as the run has sides and a roof, I did try putting tarpaulin over it to keep out the sunlight a bit longer but that didn't work, after the dog attack none of the 2 I had left showed any sign of stress, they were perfectly happy the next day both still layer eggs, the 1 that died took the brunt of the attack and the other 2 ran to me in the house, I just don't know what elseto do with her wev always called her the baby and now she's living up to it, do you think she might be too used to my company as I do spoil them rotten??
Thanks

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, sounds like she got overly stressed from the dog attack and because you have always come to her rescue, she can scream for your comfort and you will come to her. So at this point you can either continue to take care of her emotional needs, (which may fade over time) or you can give her some tough love and not go out to save her when she screams. I know how hard it is when they think you are mommy and you are supposed to come to them when they cry, LOL, but if it is getting to be too much for you, you will have to cut the apron strings and let her calm down on her own. :-)

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Thanks for reply. Going to try some tough loveiI think. The neighbours will just have to put up with her for a bit. Thanks again

I am having the same issue!! I had 3 and lost one in the middle of the night to a predator a week or so ago. Unfortunately it has left my Jolene without her companion. She has been crowing in the morning even with the other hen, Henrietta, with her. It makes me sad. I hope she will settle down and maybe even join the new 12 week old chicks I've got. Henrietta has always done her own thing and offers no companionship.

Good luck to you. It does make me nervous that neighbors will start to fuss.
