Meet Chicblonc - our roughly 6-week-old chick, breed unsure as of right now, weight unsure. This is a courtesy posting for my uncle so I don’t have super intense detail.

She came to us with an injury, from a friend. According to them, she was born healthy and fine, but then she was under mom when a rooster mounted her and got a little crushed - this was about 3 weeks ago. When she came to us the first joint away from the foot was scabbed and swollen, but it was definitely not backward. That developed slowly, to the point where we thought she had spraddle leg and attempted to fix it that way with the bandaid to masking tape pipeline, but then it started rotating like you see here.

She is eating, drinking, and using the bathroom well, and is getting around as best she can, but we want to try and help her have better mobility. She is currently living with her sister in a large brooding box set up so she can lean on the walls for extra stability, but as you can tell by the pictures we are rapidly going to outgrow that setup.

We are going to try and retrain the joint to return to its normal direction, if not fully then at least partially. But I wanted to post this here just in case this has happened to anyone else/ if you know of a better way to help her.

Also, just as a general notice, we are very familiar with the darker side of keeping farm animals. If we hit a point where we know we can’t do more for her, we will make that difficult decision at that time. So please limit the amount of guidance on mercy killing her, as we are aware that this may be an option and would just like to try a few things before we get there.

Thank you!

Poor little thing. She could have a torn tendon, or maybe she had a varus or valgus leg bone deformity before this happened. I don’t think that there is anything you can do about it unfortunately.
