I purchased two silkies from a breeder. They arrived yesterday. We noticed one of the wings looked ‘deformed’. Today we gave them a bath and discovered a severely impacted wing band. It looks like the wing and bone began to grow around it. After about 45 minutes of soaking and a lot of blood, we removed it. I’m not sure if the bone is broken- I attached a pic of what I’m seeing but don’t know their anatomy well enough.
I’ve contacted the breeder but need to know how to proceed with the wound care. We applied Neosporin.

I hope that someone can help you. I am not familiar with wing bands for chickens, and didn’t even know those existed. Vetericyn Hydrogel Spray can be good to use on wounds and left open. Can you try to see an avian vet or a regular vet innyour area for help? It is really a shame this happened to the chicken, and I hope that you can help her.

I haven’t dealt with anything this severe, but the most important thing is to avoid is infection! Neosporin is a good first step after making sure the wound is clean. I usually put coconut oil as a layer on-top or it, but Vetericyn is also really good if you can pick some up. Watch for any abnormal behaviour. If the infection has gone too far, the silkie will need a round of antibiotics from the veterinarian - I would advise to always consult your vet if you aren’t sure about the extent of the damage or how to move forward with the treatment of unique cases like this one.
