I’m a first-time chicken owner and noticed shortly after bringing home my two-week-old Silkie that he/she has a protruding vent. I’m not sure if it's a prolapse or just swollen, but I’m concerned.

So far, I’ve soaked her in warm water with Epsom salt and applied both Prep H and Neosporin, but there hasn't been any improvement over the last 3 days. It seems like she may be straining or pushing, as the area is 'pulsating' and remains red and swollen. Despite this, she’s eating, drinking, and pooping normally. After each soak, she usually poops, and I’ve also observed her pooping in the brooder.

Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a successful treatment? I am so scared this could be life threatening!

My little paint silkie was hatched 8/5/2024. About a week later, I noticed it had a prolapsed vent that was pulsating and bleeding. I know it wasn't hatched like that as I had actually taken a picture of the two paints I hatched from top and bottom side. I don't know how it got that way, but assuming it was being picked on, I separated it out with two other calm chicks into a different brooder and the vent healed but didn't go back in.

I used Preparation-H about three times a day, pushed and held it in for a few seconds. Then used Neosporin for a couple of days until it seemed healed. After about two weeks, I quit the Prep H as it was seeming hopeless. It was no longer swollen or raw, but still stuck out and pulsates.

The first picture of it.

About two weeks ago. (The one on the left).

Just now. This isn't showing much, but it is protruding and pulsating, but it's dry and not out so much like it was in the beginning.

This chick is now 2.5 months old, still has a protruding vent that pulsates. It doesn't seem to cause the chick any issues but I just wonder if it turns out to be a hen, it could have issues laying eggs, and if it's a rooster, will it have issues breeding. That remains to be seen.
