Mabel is a 10 month old maran, her normal weight around 6lbs. I noticed on 12/30 she appeared to be straining to poop and had a dirty butt, two other also had dirty butts but no other vent issues. Above mabel’s vent is extremely swollen and firm, at first I was treating her like it was a prolapse but I couldn’t ever push anything in. It’s been almost a week and she’s still so swollen, it doesn’t seem to bother her and I can’t tell she wants to go out but I’m scared the others will notice and peck it. My other chickens are fine and there’s nothing I can think of that could cause this. She hasn’t laid an egg in months, I thought due to molting and then winter, we do have a rooster but he isn’t aggressive with the hens. She is acting completely normal, eats naturewise feather fixer, and drinking, I have her separated in the house in a tent with some straw bedding. I have been doing epsom salt soaks, keeping the area clean, and putting hydrocortisone cream to hopefully help the swelling, but I feel like it’s not getting any better. She has Kind of runny poop I have to clean her butt because it keeps getting stuck. We will take her to the vet if it isn’t crazy expensive, but hoping it can resolve at home. Thank you for any help.

I wonder if she has an impacted oviduct and salpingitis. Have you tried inserting a gloved finger (lubricated with oil or vaseline,) and tried feeling for an obstruction? You might offer her a human calcium tablet or Tums to see if she will pass something like a lash egg. It is always a guess as to what is actually causing the problem.

My sister said she didn’t feel anything. And I gave her a tums yesterday, nothing has happened she looks the same, should I give it more time or give her another one? Thanks for the suggestion.

Does the bulge on her vent feel hard like an egg? Have you checked inside the vent with a finger? Is she passing droppings since the last one? You can repeat the calcium after 24 hours in case she has a stuck egg or lash egg.

The bulge is firm but still has some give to it, I can’t stick my finger in cause I have long nails but a few days ago my sister did and said she couldn’t feel anything, when she gets home I’ll have her try again. She is passing dropping normally they aren’t runny anymore either. She is acting completely normal, I will give her more tums today, should I order some antibiotics?
