The chicks were all chest bumping, and running at each other. One loud "squawk" from the little roo, and all the girls just flattened to the ground. Not a peep out of them :-). It was like he just said "enough"! It was so amusing. I hope he isn't too loud and raucous and I get to keep him. -- Carrie

Haha, sounds like you have his number! Here's hoping he turns out to be an excellent hen manager....

He sounds as if he'll be an excellent roo! I advise you to read all you can about the temperament of roosters, and how to train manners into him as well as manage him.

You will need to watch and handle him very carefully as he approaches the hormonal stage around five months. With the proper management, you can have a well-mannered little cockerel that is an asset rather than a tyrant.

Is there a good thread for that here? Thanks in advance. I do hope the neighbors don't hate the sound of a rooster since it falls under noise ordinance her in the city. (Des Moines, Iowa)

You will want to consult the most renowned rooster expert in all of the world. He's helped me with a couple of my roosters, and his techniques are highly effective. http://olychickenguy.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html He's written extensively about the psychology of chickens and deals with roosters in depth. He also has videos he's made showing how he's trained his roosters.

He runs a rooster rescue in Olympia, WA. He's delighted to answer any questions you have if you want to e-mail him. I think he'd love to help you train up a baby roo! [email protected]
