.

This is a very strange thread. I don't know where to start other than I didn't see any of the forum regulars attacking the thread starter, what I saw was people giving honest advice, answers, and warnings to particular statements or questions. I have a few points to add:

1. If celticoaksfarms (whom I don't know from a tree stump outside of the forum) isn't a breeder or at least a very experienced exhibitioner I would be very surprised. Her posts and advice can bet curt, direct, and sometimes on the almost rude side, but let's face it, words on a screen don't cart voice inflection to help interpret tone.

2. 70%cocoa and celticoaksfarm know their stuff and gladly share their knowledge and experience with who knows how many people.

3. An avian vet is a great thing to have near you, not all of us have that. It's great that you are taking his advice, but like all of us, I'm sure he doesn't know everything. Being a general practitioner is not the same as being a neuro surgeon. Having a person on hand with textbook knowledge on ducks and having another on hand that has years of hands on experience with them in everyday life... I would listen to them both, thank everyone kindly and haul myself off to research and decide for myself what my best treatment plan should be.

3. Hatcheries want newbies to believe they are getting show quality, upon occasion that happens. You ordered from a hatchery and that's what you got.

4. Chill.

I wasn't going to respond to this thread because it really seems like the op is trolling. I did post on the off chance that in the future this thread may help someone else because of the advice given in it.

The people you are debating with have a lot of experience with owning and breeding ducks, many of them show quality blue ribbon winners. Some of them have a lot of experience and knowledge about genetics. Metzer Farms is a pet/farm duck hatchery, though it is possible to get great quality ducks there. But, their aim is to breed healthy and strong ducklings for pets, for eggs or for food. If you want show quality ducks that are superior representatives of a particular breed, then it's best to try a private breeder or a place like Holderreads where their aim is to breed the perfect duck for any breed. Of course, the price is going to be much higher.
Darlene couldn't have said it better.

not one person said dint take your duck to a vet for medical care.we did however point out you maybe were mislead by a medical doctor about breeding/dietary/and genetic issues with those ducks you purchased.

Metzers has great hardy stock, our Khaki Campbells are from there, they lay daily, never miss a beat and are great buggers. wont show them, but not why we bought them. In place of ranting and taking things out of context and becoming so upset try and learn from people who are seriously trying to help you learn and grow as a pet duck owner.

its simple really, show birds come from show stock, pets come from pet stock. By show birds i refer to those birds who meet the SOP for the breed. Its great to be passionate, it isnt great to be on the defensive so much as close your mind off to learning. I mean really, so many great breeders offering up free advice who has great stock and have been there done that with waterfowl. Again i will stress (money or a degree) doesn't buy respect, only shiny things. Seen plenty of "doctors" make horrific mistakes, and simple ones too. Be open to other ideas, and when asked questions come back with answers not a rant, or fight.

good post Nickie, and thank you, and yes I can be short on here. I am usually trying to post an answer, chase a toddler, feed a new goat, monitor incubators, care for the home, farm, animals ect. so I get to the point and get moving. Tonight alone, I bottle fed a goat, researched some goat health questions i had, did dinner, bath/bed for the toddler. Posted on here, cleaned the kitchen, took the baby goat outside, checked the guinea keets, posted on here, worked on some writing, ect. My ime is valuable, i figure everyone elses is too. when asking advice i give answers not oh i am sorry hope it works out. (because the this is what I would do sorta implies i hope everything works out.)

It must be a mother of toddlers thing (I have a 3.5 year old and a 5 year old), I always like the quality of the information above the fluffy stuff. I just don't like seeing quality advice tossed aside because your name doesn't have a DVM after it.

I am completely happy with my ducks from Metzers. I have ducks from another popular hatchery and they are even more so 'pet quality' than Metzers. I knew going into buying my ducks from Metzers that I was buying from a reputable waterfowl 'hatchery'. I knew I would get healthy pet quality ducks that would give me eggs and cute muppets to frolick on my pond. That said- I can tell with even my inexperienced eye that my ducks are not show quality. The way they stand, a stray marking here and there. They hatch. That's what they do. They are too large scale to go through their stock and grow out thousands of show quality ducks, then weed through those for the best of the best...this is a process that tales YEARS and a ton of money. That is not the service they are offering.

You want a papered purebred Pomeranian pup- you find a highly regarded breeder with ribbons under their belt so you know what stock you are getting. You pay fat bank for that privilege. You want a Pom pup for a family pet and do not intend to show- you check for people selling Pom pups inexpensively.

I think many of us might be slightly confused why the fact that ducks bought from a hatchery are not spot on perfect has you so upset and warning others. I do not mean that in a 'mean' way. I was honestly surprised by the post when I read it earlier today. I think most people who do their homework understand this about ALL hatcheries. It's common knowledge.

I think it IS important to point out that ANY of the hatcheries that sell their inexpensive chicks, ducklings, goslings, turkeys...they will be decent examples of the breed but they are not bred for anything specific except the purpose they are advertised for. I hope that no ill will was formed by the happenings in this post. A lot of breeders help out on these forums- some know their shiz and some really don't. It's very apparent very quickly who is who. Let's all be respectful of those that know their junk, who answer the same questions 735261 times and take time out of their business day to share expertise and encouragement.

No one that I saw in this thread was trying to be mean- if anyone else was like me- I think they might have been taken aback by the hostile post pointing at Metzers when ALL hatcheries sell pet quality stock and it's common knowledge. I can breed my unpapered rottweiler with another unpapered rottweiler and come up with aperfectly healthy adorable rott pup that has an extra toe, or ears set wrong etc...the difference is a breeder destroys those dogs are quietly sells them and holds back the best for themselves.

Hope everyone learned something useful from this thread and has a great weekend!
