6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Okay, just so I'm clear, I'm using a cut out flat to hold my eggs but for lock down, am I supposed to remove them from the flat and place them on the 'bator mesh or keep them in the flat and just not turn them?

I'm thinking @ronott1 said to leave them in the flat but I need to be positive.
What is a cutout flat? If that one of those plastic trays generally used in the cabinet bators? If it is dont they get their legs all stuck in it or tip it over before all the eggs are hatched?

Awe yeah! I just typed this into google: silver wheaton chicken

It didnt really give me a link when i copied in the search bar

From what I understand and w

hat I'm using, it would be a section of an egg carton without the top. The one I'm using actually came from a box containing 5 dozen eggs. I just cut the points between the eggs out for better airflow. There are no moving parts so no problems with them getting tangled up that way, my main concern is when they zip, they would have to exit the egg vertically instead of horizontally.

Edit: I just remembered I have a picture of it!!!

I think lockdown is today? My eggs are due to hatch on the 26th...i set in the 5th...

I have a table candling video to share once it finishes uploading. Its from day 17

Chicken eggs?

If they were set before noon on the fifth, they are due on the 25th according to the chart. Today would be day 19 so yes, lock them down.

If they are shipped eggs, they will do better in the flat. Not shipped eggs will be fine on the wire but you have to make sure the first ones hatched do not mess with the eggs still hatching.

I like hatching in cartons but others like the wire. In a lot of ways it is a preference.

Okay, thanks. Mine are not shipped but still should be okay hatching in the flat, right?

I've been poking around on BYC about the "carton method". Some people swear by it, some people hate it. I'm going to try it this time because I have lots of saddle-shaped air cells, and it's supposed to help with that. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...on-methods-with-shipped-eggs/30#post_14441645

I trust Ron's experience so if he says it works for him, then I'll certainly try it. If it doesn't work for me, then I will do trouble shooting and find out if it's my own fault or if it's just not something that works for me. If it's not through any fault of my own, then I'll simply try a different method or go back to the original.

I most definitely trust Ron's experience! Plus, I'm always up for experimenting!
