Central Texas
Hi we are from central Texas and I have been reading from this site since we got our little babies(2 1/2 weeks). Finally decided to join. We have 7 mixed breed chicks we got from a breeder. We are loving them. Days are in the 80's and nights in the 60's. Would it be ok if we turned off the light during the day. Tgey stay as far away from it as possible. They also spend their days in an extra large dog crate on the back porch and nights in a 55 gallon heavy duty plastic bin in the garage. I move the light and supplies with them, but I would like to keep them outside full time. At this age would that be ok. I'm so afraid the light might go out. Thank you so much.

Use their behavior as a guide. If they avoid the heat, they don't need it. If they huddle together they're cold. If they just wander all about, they're just right.
They're probably getting close to not needing anything at that temperature.

I kind of figured as much. Thank you. I'd like them to stay in the crate at night. They can fly up to the top of the bin now and I don't want them to get out and get hurt.

Hello and Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined us! Yes, you can certainly turn the light off, mine are only a week old, and I keep their light off most of the time in those temperatures. (For more on this topic, check out the link in my signature ''a journal on raising baby chicks'')
Good luck with your chicks!
