I purchased 18 silkie hatching eggs. Put 22 in the incubator (The 18 I purchased and 4 from my coo) we are now 7 days until hatch day! With -4 VERY active babies!! 🙌 These babies have caused me so much stress!
Most of the shipped eggs had saddle bag air sacs on day 7. I immediately transferred them to a styrofoam egg carton. pointy side down of course…
My questions are this…
Are styrofoam egg cartons ok to hatch from?
When should I put the silkie eggs on lock down?
Would they do better hatching in the cartons or remove them before lockdown and place them on their side?
(Incubator is the nurture rite 360)

If it was me, on day 18 or nearly day 19 lay them on their side in the incubator.

My question is will then being in styrofoam alter the heat and humidity getting to them?

I’ve just come off the back of one of the most stressful hatches I’ve ever had 😅 wishing you good luck 🙏🏻 make sure to post pictures once they all hatch 😁
I would personally put them on their side for hatching as I always try think about how a broody hen would do it, i think on their side is probably the most natural way. If you have a very stable humidity in your incubator which can stay at the necessary high humidity for a long time then it won’t matter about putting them in lockdown a day early or so, I usually do late day 18 or 19.
Good luck!🙂

I was thinking the same thing… on lockdown day just take them out and let them hatch like normal. I will definitely be showing these babies off… they are going to be BEAUTIFUL!

100% agree, I always think Silkies look so cool at every age, whereas a lot of breeds start looking like a strange mix of colours at a few weeks old as they start to feather out. Do you know what colours they are going to be?

Paint, splash and buff… only 1 buff made it! But I have several paint and splash!

Well here are my 13 chicks! 7 and 8 days old now! ❤️💞
