I have a 7 week old chick who I've named Chicken Surprise. I was hatching a bunch of BSL chicks in Dec and was very surprised to find a yellow chick in one of my eggs. I surmise that one of my main flock eggs (mixed flock) got into my hatching eggs by accident). I had to do an assist because the poor thing got stuck to its shell. But it is doing fine now and I want a second opinion on what the chick's gender and likely parentage are. I have two roosters in my main flock. A Buff Orp and a LF Black Cochin. This chick is obviously from the Buff Roo. The options for Mama, Buff, New Hampshire, and Delaware. There might be a SMALL chance that she is from one of my Leghorn mixes but I doubt it (because of her coloring and the coloring of the egg).

I think I might have a pullet on my hands

But, I don't think it is a pure Buff.

The black in the wing and the faint markings mean the mama must be the Delaware or New Hampshire. At 7 weeks it is still early to tell its sex with any certainty. I am a little concerned about the slight wattle development and coloration. So while it looks like a pullet now, it could very well be a slow developing cockerel. Especially since Orpingtons are so slow to reach sexual maturity. My advice is to wait 2 or 3 more weeks and try again.

Here are two of the BSLs I hatched at the same time They both have a barred Dom/buff Mother and a New Hampshire Father. The little pullet has similar amounts of red in she comb/wattles as Chicken surprise, though you can't see the wattles in the pictures..
BSL pullet.
