If I hadn't seen it, I would not believe it.

Seven weeks and two days ago, my broody hatched two baby chicks. One is half Easter Egger and half Barred Rock. We have suspected for some time this chick was a cockerel. The other chick is half Easter Egger and half Buff Orpington. We have suspected that this chick is a pullet.

These two are living in a dog cage here in the house right now, because it has been too cold to put them out in the henhouse. (Actually, they are scheduled to go into the henhouse tomorrow, since the snow should melt by the afternoon).

But having them in the house, we are able to watch the little ones interact pretty frequently -- especially since their cage is now about 10 feet from my computer desk.

And I have been watching the last few hours.

Not once, but several times this evening, I have watched the suspected cockerel try to mount the suspected pullet.

Do the cockerels really begin to experiment sexually at a mere 51 days old?

That seems a little early to me.

BTW, the (suspected) pullet does NOT appreciate it, and does everything she can to get away from him.

Do the little cockerels really become sexual that early?

They are sexual while still in the egg, it is the nature of the species.

I have heard that pullets will mount pullets at a young age like that. Do you have photos of these birds? I bet the forum could help you with the sex of the chirpees.

I would like to see some pictures of them, if you have any.

Some of my eggs I am going to hatch will be those same crosses, I would like to see what they will look like.

Thanks!

Mounting can also be attributed to assertion of dominance. They are quite capable this early of trying to establish pecking order. Do they also chase and nip at each other?
