One of our recently hatched Rhode Island Red hens was killed today.

Background information.
Our original flock was half black Austrolop, half Rhode Island Red. Chickens have been doing well but we got sick of the Austrolops going broody all the time (and generally just bring more needy) so decided to incubate 20 Rhode Island Red Eggs.

We clearly misidentified 3 as we ended up with 3 Austrolop cross Rhode Island Red (we call them the Darth Gingers) and 15 Rhode Island Reds.

We also got two heritage turkeys (Christmas - Bourbon Red and Thanks giving - Chocolate Brown).

The turkeys did a great job integrating with the big chickens and would roost them every night in the hen house. All in all things were looking good.

The younglings have been outside with the big chickens for the last month (separate by some chicken netting) and everything looked like it was going well. On Friday we removed the fence and the younglings were able yo integrate with the big chickens.

Anyway today whilst I was out there one of the turkeys killed the one Rhode Island Red hen.

The turkeys have been sent to freezer camp.

We will keep an eye on them to see how everyone does but I think the chickens will be ok.
