we just noticed this afternoon that our chick here has been keeping one eye closed, even while she’s active, walking, or standing and eating/drinking. she’s also resting a lot more than I think is usual and has been continually laying in the sun with both eyes closed going into deep sleeps. the rest of the flock seems normal. I happened to catch her poop so including a photo. they did have some watermelon yesterday.

when I pick her up she just stays still and closes both eyes. her feet feel noticeably warm as well.

what should I look into here? this morning she was totally normal. I hadn’t checked them for a few hours when my kid just came to tell me about the closed eye. I’ve been watching her on and off for the last hour. is it possible it was an insect sting? I don’t see any redness, swelling or any evidence of an injury.

thank you for your thoughts.

What happened with this chick? I have one doing the same thing. Did it get better?
Did your get better? Mine is doing the exact same thing but it's been 2 days and still no sign of going back to normal. (It is super hot right now. In the 90s-100°F)

Welcome to BYC! Where are you located (country? state?)

My chick's eye did get better. It was only a matter of hours (not days) though. I believe she just got dust or dirt in it. If yours has been keeping the eye closed for 2 days, you may want to try rinsing it out with a saline eye wash and putting Terramycin ointment on it. Tractor Supply in the US carries it, and it can also be found online through a Google search.

I don't think the heat would cause the eye issue, but it can cause lots of other problems.

Thank you! Glad to be here. I'm in the great state of Texas!

My chick is staying secluded from the others eventhough they always stick together. She is still eating and drinking but just acting strange. With her eyes mostly closed.
