Hi! I'm a brand new chick momma. I have twenty 7 week old chicks. They are my first chickens I have ever had. I have a mix of Easter Eggers, Splash Amereraucanas, Silkies and White Polish. Out of my three white polish I have one that has a large bald spot on the back of it's head. I have been watching it for a few weeks and it doesn't seem to be changing much. Forgive me because I don't know the correct chicken "lingo" but at the base of the feather follicle there appears to be black dots. Like the follicle is dead. You can also see there is blood in a few of the follicles as well. I don't see the other chickens picking at him/her so I don't think that is the problem. Any advice to what is going on with my little one and what I can do to help him/her. I would appreciate it so much!

This happened with my polish pullets. The others are picking out the feathers and will keep picking them until the head is bloody. I used BluKote spray available online and in feedstores, to disinfect and color the red skin and missing feathers dark blue. This will stain fingers, clothes, and feathers, but it will fade and grow out. Apply every 2-3 days until the feathers are completely grown back in. This may happen from time to time if they get bored, so watch for it, and use the BluKote before it gets bad. Until you get some, I would separate the pullet in a dog crate with food and water.

Thank you so much for the good advice! I hadn’t seen them pecking at this little guy so I wasn’t sure but that definitely makes the most sense. Neither of our local feed stores had the BluKote but I was able to get it quickly through Prime. Thanks again!
