7 week old with loss of balance, finding it hard to stand - Updated - it was cocci?

The lack of appetite is concerning. Sometimes, it take something that they really, really like to get them eating again. Sometimes it is just nature's way of saying that there is something wrong and that it can't be fixed.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this

Thanks so much for all the replies - if she doesn't make it she will be my first loss, i am really not looking forward to it :(

after reading all your marek's post, i have decided to revaccinate everyone as a booster..!

I love being able to help people...but, there are many days that I wish I wasn't known as the Marek's lady

I've buried so many of my babies and each one hurts as much as the one before

Thank you! It really does make me feel good to be able to help others. At least something good has come out of all the heartache! If I didn't have this forum, somedays I just don't know what I would do.

Thanks again for the kind words. It's people like you that make it all worthwhile :)

Hello, update.

The legs are still bad. She can't stand. Wings and neck all ok, and she balances herself sitting upright with the wings. Her appetite more or less returned, and she is eating on her own. I made her a sling so she doesn't have to sit on her hocks and soil herself all the time. She didn't seem to mind the warm bath and hairdryer one bit though!

She moves her legs and curls/uncurl toes when i flip her over, but i noticed they were shaking today, when turned upside down... this is new.... i am sure a bad development...

I think i haven't been giving her enough of the vitamins, based on what i have been reading on the board. I was only giving her a tiny pinch of the B... So i am upping the does. I also got Turmeric and the hypericum perforatum, and i am going to dose her with dose too. They do not seem toxic, so i suppose the worst case scenario is that they do nothing.

Poops normal, no blood or diarrhea. No bad respiratory signs of any kind. Alert, peeps, looks around. Looks scruffy.

I am taking a poop to the vet tomorrow for testing. There is no poultry vet anywhere near, and my cat vet is only willing to test for worms and cocci. Might as well get those results.

I have to admit that I don't like how this is progressing. It's really looking more and more like Marek's. Marek's can go into remission and they eat and drink normally. Sometimes, even the paralysis goes away. But, it does come back :(

Don't be surprised if the vet finds Coccidia...it seems to be a very opportunistic critter that loves the down and out.

I still find it hard to believe it's mareks, but it could be some neurological condition? I'll give it one more week. Wiill post whatever results come out...!

well. I don't want to sound hopeful. But the chick did just stand up and took a couple of step before stumbling down again. it also managed to use its foot to scratch her head, and can also arrange herself sitting without sticking out her feet. It hadn't been able to stand for two days and yesterday morning could only sit with her legs sticking out in front. One leg is stronger than the other.

for what it's worth since last night, I am now giving her daily 2 tablets complete b-complex + nutridrench + turmeric (an entire capsule) and also the hypericum (st john's worth, also the entire capsule). I crush them all together, mix with water, and use a feeding syringe to make her drink it (poor thing... it smells awful!!). I split the dose between the morning and evening. Giving her to eat feed, yogurt, babycake, cat food, anything she shows an interest in since she had no appetite tuesday and wednesday so i want her to eat a lot. I wouldn't not say we are out of the woods at all, but it's a very small improvement.

The turmeric seems such a good anti-inflamatory, i just mixed some in with my 17 year old cat's food. She ate it! We'll see....

That is wonderful but, some of those doses seem extreme...be careful. Although, when I'm faced with doing something or nothing, I usually throw everything at them and hope for the best!
