Hi I was wondering what I can do to help my 7 year old hen who is still laying eggs. Her name is Silky. She’s an indoor chicken who wears diapers around the house. Her and her sister, Luna, get butt air in a cat kennel every day. Silky’s last egg before she started molting caused a little bit of trouble for her and she got egg bound. Luckily I was able to get it out of her just fine. But she’s done molting and after Christmas (which she was super excited about) she suddenly started laying eggs. We celebrated a late Christmas this year on the 28th. The 29th is when she started laying again. But she had laid her second egg today. But every time she stopped pooping as much the day before she lays. Should I be concerned? Is there any way that I could help her? Is there a way to get her to stop laying if being egg bound is too high risk for her? Please let me know what you think down below. If you want pictures let me know.

I do not know of a way for chicken to stop laying eggs. They do reduce their laying with age. They also reduce egg laying due to lower light availability. That is main reason chickens go on strike during winter. Shorter days.
Your chicken being a house pet, is receiving plenty of light.
I never encountered egg bound,, so cant help you there.

WISHING YOU BEST ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with your pet :highfive:

Your chicken’s probably just a breed that lays eggs for longer than average.
What average?
My 9 and 10 year old bantams chickens still lay eggs. The breeds that lay many eggs in their first years stop laying earlier and often get health problems with laying.

There is an implant that you can get to stop a hen from laying,
A vet can do this. It works max 9 months. And yes this is expensive. If the chicken is a real pet you can choose this option to avoid the risk of inner damage.

Do you have an aviam vet nearby?

Not really. I live in an area where specialists are extremely uncommon. The only one that I know isn’t willing to do risky things like that on chickens. I am just hoping that she will be fine and in time stop laying naturally. Without the loss of her life of course.

My older hen (8/9 years old) still lays during the spring and summer, and she’s completely fine. Make sure your hen has a good balanced diet and yours would most likely be fine too. You can also limit the light time, to mimic winters conditions, so she has a longer break from laying.
