Many of you know pieces of my chicken saga—well, it turns out this has been an uphill battle from day one. Yesterday my husband finally threw his hands up out of nowhere and said, “Order ten more chickens. This drama is too much. Something is inevitably going to happen again, there is strength in numbers.”

For context: my ideal flock size was seven. I started with three RIRs—Isla, Iris, and Indigo (yes, all “I” names). Then I hatched three more: Sumi, Suki, and Roo (Roo was named by my friend’s kids, not me- but initially I was sticking with 'S' names). After that came a junglefowl rescue egg we named Gypsy—who lived up to the name perfectly.

Fast-forward, and thanks to a combination of human and canine chaos, we lost everyone except Roo and Gypsy. We then secured the area in ways most people wouldn't, but this was serious business.

So we added five new birds, all alcohol-themed: Captain Morgan, Ouzo, Kraken, Stoli, and Bailey (who sadly didn’t make the journey). Kraken is almost certainly a rooster—and chicken math with two roosters does not work with this tiny amount of hens. Rehoming roosters here is not a thing. Unless I have absolutely no choice after puberty, not a single one of these birds is going to end up crossing a rainbow in the sky. I gained 2 females, and too cocks, and a lot of drama.

Which brings us to now: I’ve ordered eight more chicks— Dec 17th delivery.

  • 3 Cream Legbars
  • 3 Lisa Steele Eggers
  • 2 Swedish Flowers

I’m working with whatever is in stock as soon as possible—colorful egg layers, heat-tolerant breeds, and available from Meyer Hatchery since they’re the only ones who reliably deliver here.

Now I need names. I’ve never had a group of eight before—my batches are usually 3–5—so my husband is already out there expanding the coop (even tho we free range in the jungle- but fr integration issues).

I like a theme to the names- I was thinking flowers? or countries?- as everyone *should be a female this round.
Ideas?

Edit: I cant spell.

HAHA! wow that is quite a list!. Okay, so from your list,
For the Steele Eggers (gray color): Poppy (like the seed), Chia, and Ill throw in Dasheen (it is a vegetable here).

The three Cream Legbars (multi-colored): Willow, Daphne, Athelas (hubby likes it as he is greek).

For the swedish: Flora and Blossom make total sense.

But eager to hear what other come up with!

I like the flower theme.
You could even stick with flowers that bloom a particular color, i.e. purple - Aster, (morning) Glory, Hyacinth, Iris, Lilac, Petunia, Viola or Violet, Vinca, Wisteria.

I have a Swedish flower hen currently growing up in my flock. She is sweet, spicy, bossy and daring. I think she’s going to end up the top of her age mate’s flock.

If mine didn’t already have a perfect name (Janeway after the Star Trek captain), I’d pick something like Saffron or Ginger.

Okay saffron and ginger were on my list before making this post. But then I thought about nicknames- so it would be 'saf' and 'gin' haha
