8 month old Barred Rocks

They are not free ranged , BUT NOT locked in a coop neither . they have 24/7 access to their 18x32 run and their 8x12 coop . They hav e plenty of clean fresh water and laying pellets ... I gives treats also ... bread , cooked rice , crushed corn bread ..... MAYBE I should try feeding more greens ... MIGHT do the trick

Hello, Liz ~
I wasn't speaking to you directly; I was just putting some thoughts out for people to comment upon in the way of food, etc.

Here in so. California we still have quite a bit of sun throughout the day, but it's a shorter time frame. I would say the sun is up at 7am and the girls are in their coop by 5pm.
Still......

My BO did squat for me once or twice; the others haven't at all. And I've noticed that her comb is a little 'floppy'

. It looks like the Black Australorpe is getting a floppy comb, also. So I'm thinking this is another show of hormonal changes in prep for laying eggs. A couple of weeks back they were all pretty crabby one with another. My first thought was PMS!

So I'm sure there are lots of subtle and not so subtle signs for which to look. However, bottom line is they just won't lay until they're good and ready.

I really think right now its all about the length of the day. Days are short and getting shorter. This not the time for a hen to start laying, I would think once the days start getting longer that you'll have them laying.

I feel you! My Barred Rock gets into the nesting box everyday, ruts around, then comes out...and nothing. She is 5 months old now, pushing 6 months old.
