To my amazement & surprise when I went to gather eggs the other day I found 9 eggs (I had to count my collection 3 times, I thought someone spiked my coffee & I was seeing double :) but...). I have been getting between 6-8 eggs daily. IS IT POSSIBLE that one laid two eggs? Maybe it was backed up from the day before & both came out at once? I'm certain I didin't miss collecting one the day before as I checked twice that day because of only getting 6 eggs.

I know the process/cycle a hen goes through to produce an egg (which is normally a 24 hour period) so I'm pretty sure that there was no time to generate 2 eggs back to back.

What are your ideas on this occurance???

I love love love my chickens!!!

Wow, really? Is this a 'rare' event or does it happen often?

I knew it!!! My hens said it couldn't be done. I am printing this thread and taking it to them, so they can see what real slackers they are!

Some hens short cycle, that is they lay at less than 24 hour intervals. It is not a consistent happening so don't get your hopes up. I already had the discussion with Goldie our Golden Comet who had two eggs for us one morning (she was in hospital at the time) and I only checked the nest barrel once a day.

She looked at me with the ole evil eye and squawked out the chicken equivalent of: Yeah right, you don't give me any cut of the action so I ain't gonna do it again for you.

Well that is nice to know, thanks so much for enlightening me on this subject! I was afraid that I was going a bit looney tunes when I first counted the eggs. I try to be as knowledgeable as possible about my critters so this is another entry into my databanks.

Thanks again!
