8 Week Old Chick - Vomiting Blood?

Yesterday I was checking on all my chickens, feeding them and giving them water. I noticed one of my 8 week old cream legbar girls had one of her legs stretched out and was having a hard time getting around. I separated her from the other 9 chicks she was with and couldn’t seem to figure out what was going on. She was perfectly fine before yesterday. I’ve been keeping her in the house isolated and her leg isn’t getting much better yet. I initially thought maybe a nutritional deficiency and have been giving her some scrambled eggs with her food and planned on getting some vitamins. Today I noticed that there are pools of bright red blood in a couple places in the box she’s in. I’ve checked her everywhere and can’t find any injuries that would be producing the blood. I believe she is vomiting it because it appears she is having normal poops. She’s becoming a bit more listless as time goes on but she’s still eating and drinking. Not moving around too much but I thought that was mostly because of her leg and the box she’s in isn’t very big. None of the other chicks in the pen she was in seem to be having any problems. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Chickens can’t vomit so it sounds to me like it might be coccidiosis because that’s really the only thing I know of that would produce bloody poops. I would get her and the other chicks started on Corid ASAP. I am not sure about the leg issue though. What is the surface in the broody? She may have hurt it if it’s slippery? Is it possible it’s sprained or broken or anything? She may just be not feeling well. You could try some NutriDrench or Rooster Booster for the nutrients of you want. Although if the other chicks are fine it’s not likely a deficiency. What is she eating?

I guess I’d describe their brooder as a plastic container but I started with paper towels on the bottom and then a couple layers of pine shavings. So what they’re walking on is pine shavings. She is a little bit smaller than some of the others so when I first found her like that I thought maybe someone had picked on her but then I was searching and found a few places that said sometimes it’s a vitamin deficiency. Now with the blood I’m not sure what to think. I did start them on Corid once I saw the blood just as a precaution but it’s weird because she’s having all kinds of normal poops. Can they have normal poops and then poop a bunch of blood in between? It doesn’t look broken to me - can they dislocate around the hip area? I don’t know how to tell. It seems slightly better today as far as when I try to bend it she’s not as guarded but she still keeps it stretched out all the time. I will try the vitamins when I can get them too.

What were they vaccinated for? The vaccinations are usually for Mareks or something which is not what the medicated feed is for. Although personally I don’t really think medicated feed is necessary but it’s usually for coccidiosis not Mareks. Unless they got a Coccidiosis vaccine?

Pine shavings should be fine! That’s what mine are always on.

I’m not sure as I’ve never had a chicken with it but I think they can still have some normal poops, yes. But not entirely sure. How long did you give them the Corid for? I think it needs to be like 10 days.

Is it swollen or bruised or anything at all?? Yes I think they can dislocate their hip and can break it too so I’d feel up there and check. Although if it’s improving it’s probably not that.

I’d keep up with the Corid and try the vitamins.

Do you have Corid on hand?
If not can you go get some now?

If You are treating coccidiosis with Corid it is important to NOT give vitamins at the same time.
