8 week old lost it's wing

Yes, you read it right.

One of my "rarest of the rare" collection had a bum wing last week but eats and drinks well. Lays on it's bad wing for some reason and basically steps on it every time it gets up.

Well last night I checked their water and found a complete wing

Looked around and sure enough, pulled off at the joint. Unreal....

So I put it in the hospital (rabbit cage) because I didn't want anyone to get a taste of the red flesh that was exposed. I put some ointment on the wound, filled the waterer with vitamin/electrolytes and one tablet of aspirin (my wife's idea but made sence to me. If I lost a limb, I would ask for something alot stronger though).

I think I know the answer to this but is there any good life for a chicken in this kind of shape? I do think he/she is in pain or discomfort but is still eating and drinking. Maybe I should just put him/her out of their misery??

There have been several people who had chickens that lost wings. I think theirs were due to predator attacks. The chicken, if it heals, will be just fine without the wing.

Thanks for the reply. In all honesty, I didn't know this was common

I searched and found a few threads that fit my needs. Now I just need to decide what to do. Some use antibiotics, some don't. Keep them warm, keep them cold.....

Is there a vet in the house???

I don't think that using an antibotic ointment on an injury is ever a bad idea. I would also give her something like Poultry Drench.

I have a one year old EE that lost her wing...similar to your story - she would run and step on it, tripping herself...sorta' funny, sorta' not, anyway - she does well - lays fine, eats, drinks and even flys some - as well as fat chickens fly. She does have some balance issues, truoble getting up onto the roosting poles at night, but other than that she is golden. Antibiotic ointment, electrolites, protien is what worked for us.

Just a quick update. So far, so good. It is eating fine, drinking a lot a water w/chick electrolytes, and the best part, chirping again!!!

I think it will be fine, just not a sale able bird. Going to hang on to this one since it is unique.

I stole a name from someone on this forum. Named it Uno!

Thanks for all the advice. Now I need to decide when to re-introduce to the rest of the flock. I'd hate to have a spoiled bird
