8 Weeks Old...White...Fat Legs...Won't Perch...Lay Around...Huge

So, we cut back on their feed and let them out of the pen to free roam and they are slimming down and doing good. Funniest thing is a couple mornings ago when I was leaving for work, I heard a 'cockool-doo-da-do. So, now I have a rooster!!!!!

We've had several folks in the past week or so, like you unintentionally got Cornish x instead of other white breeds they ordered. Especially hard for the ones with one children who thought they had pets. Hatcheries and some of the feed stores seem to have this happen more and more lately.

To get them to live longer, all you really can do is cut back their food and let them free range. They have been eating wrong for so long that they will likely not live too long. It is truly disgusting what humans do to animals to make them the way they want them to be! Then people accidentally buy them...Geez.

Oh, we've cut back alright! And we let them out every morning and put them in at night. When I read hubby this thread about 'franken-chickens' and being bred for meat, he made the decision to just stop feeding them so much and try to integrate them.....so far so good. We have a creek running through the bottom yard, so they won't get thirsty. The funniest thing is this: When I went to work the other morning, I heard a 'cocka-doo-da-do'! So at least one of them is a rooster!!!! lol. Haven't figured out which one yet.

Also, there is a little one I call 'baby'. Kinda like the runt. She's the only one that when I sit down on the porch will come over and let me pick her up.

The two reds we have are a hoot too. They are 2 years old and actually smaller than them! They are slowly getting used to them.

Just went through this myself with TSC. was supposed to be getting white leghorn pullets but got Cornish cross of which half were roosters also. I found someone to take them since my kids would not allow me to butcher them. I have now started over with a mixed breed flock.

In the responses I received in my thread it was advised that the birds commonly have health issues when raised beyond the processing age.

Well, they might have 'health issues', but we want chickens mainly for eggs. (And we give 99% of them away) Not meat. So, they will live out there natural life in more comfort than their ancestors. We'll be much more careful if/when we buy chicks from TSC. Shame on them.

We got most of ours from TSC but got lucky enough to get exactly what we wanted. Our local store has several employees who raise chickens and I like dealing with them more.

has anybody complained to tsc about getting broilers when you ordered layers? man I would be sooooooo ******!

Al
There have also been instances where TSC sold people Leghorn chicks instead of the broiler chicks they wanted. Another unacceptable situation.
