9 birds killed in 2 weeks. Warning... graphic in nature. UPDATE PG 5

OH, haha, well that makes sense now, I was wondering how you thought a pig was getting into my coop. teehee, Oh what I've learned during this homesteading adventure I've been on the last year.... I about spewed my cola all over my keyboard laughing at myself when I read you meant coons. Anyway that makes sense. I hope the dogs will take care of it, if not I'll have an angry coon on my hands if I manage to trap it. And if I do have a sow with kits now I've got to worry about those kits growing up.

Yes, I meant maternal female (sow) and juvenile offspring (kits). Hogs would have been sow and piglets.

i'm sorry! Sounds like you are overwhelmed with work there. Is there any way you can hire, or barter for services, with a young man to help secure that coop, or maybe do other work around your farm? i know i've reached a point where i can't do it all. We hire a young man to do the big stuff, like mucking out the goat and goose pens, or for any heavy projects. Maybe you can find someone who would do some work for you in exchange for eggs? Your local feed store might know someone willing. Just a suggestion.

My son and I got the coop fixed all around the top with 1/4 inch hardware cloth. My puppies got the possum at 2am on Saturday morning. I was afraid to let my pups out of the fenced yard but they stayed right around the house and within my acreage. I'm so proud of them. They are only 8 months old and I have been training them since they were 2 months old. They don't chase my chickens much anymore and if they start a "leave it" command usually works. I'm such a proud Pyr mama, their first kill before their first bday. lol. My husband saw the deed and said the girls worked as a team really well to eliminate it.

The danger from that critter may not be over. It is more likely than not dead but that does not stop it from getting revenge. Get rid of carcass or dogs will waite until it gets green, bloated and stinky before rolling on and / or eating it. My dog does both and started a collection upwind of house that we did not discover until wind shifted into bedroom window at about 2 AM. He was getting more oppossums than we knew could be around and stinch seemed to be attracting more like Japanees beetles do each other.

Thanks for the comments, but that carcass was burned right after the photo was taken. I burn all my dead critters right away. It did take a lot of relighting and burning all day to get it burnt to ashes.
