I had a broody hen so I got some fertilized eggs from a neighbor for her to hatch. The chicks are now 9 weeks old and one is biting the mother in the neck. This is not a peck it is a definite bite. It bites and holds on. Last night was the first night the mother roosted with the other hens. Do you think this biting chick is a rooster? The chicks are mixed breeds and the mother is I believe a red star.

My guess would be that the chick was tellling the mama it didn't want to be mothered any more.

I hope you are right. I really don't want any roosters. One neighbor isn't exactly thrilled about the hens clucking when they lay. A rooster might set him over the edge.
