We have been calling this bird Tom Riddle since week 4, as the comb looked distinctly 3 row. The neck feathers scream roo to me, too. I don't have many doubts, but I didn't think it could hurt to get group confirmation. .

Aaand I just realized I deleted the comb close ups. Will update with those.

Nothing screams cockerel to me. For clarification, all pea combs should have three rows. On cockerels and roosters the rows are often bigger than on pullets or hens so it is easier to distinguish the three separate rows. Three clear rows does not automatically mean it's a male. For reference, this is what one of cockerel's combs looked like at 8.5 weeks.

We have an Ameraucana whose 3 row pea comb wasn't notable until he was older. This addition to our flock included 3 EE's (our first). And I was under the (apparently wrong!) assumption that the males primarily held the 3 row. The other 2 EE's have a small, obvious single comb. I thought this one's neck feathers felt and looked significantly different but maybe that's bc they are mutts to begin with.

That's what I thought too when I got my first 3 Blue Ameraucanas. They were straight run and one had 3 distinct rows while the other two didn't. I thought for sure it was male based on that little false bit of information that is spread around. It was only after that I learned it wasn't the case. They all have 3 rows it's just some are easier to distinguish. How did it turn out? Well that chick is now a lovely hen (who is currently brooding three chicks) and one of the others is a handsome rooster. Funny thing is she also was smaller and grew feathers slower too. She didn't follow any of the so called "rules."

Oooh my. I am literally learning something all the time owning chickens. Amazing. Now I feel like I am on extra close watch with all 3. I need to get more/better pics for the BC experts. :hmm

Tom Riddle is definitely, 100% a pullet. Cockerels would not have that even color pattern at 9 weeks.

I would be thrilled! Esp after Tonks ended up a roo. That's what I thought (coloring) but was confused by some of the other qualities. All 3 EE's that I now *think* are pullets...all have boy names. Tom, Kingsley, and Mad Eye...not only do I have a chicken problem but I also have a Harry Potter problem.

I love the Harry Potter names.
