Today I noticed that one of my Buckeyes didn't seem like herself. She would come investigate what was going on when I went into the run (they all usually come running, so curious!) but then she would wander a few steps away and stand there, slowly closing her eyes. She'd stand there for a minute with her eyes closed, then she would wander off and go lay down near the coop. Here is the recent events.
1. The 9 week old buckeyes joined my 12 and 16 week old girls in the coop and run about a week ago.
2. I recently added some screened sandy loam to the run because the ground where we put the coop is very hard and kind of rocky. I purchased it from a reputable landscape company. (I hope I didn't bring in something in the soil!
) They do love digging in it.
3. The temperatures have spiked from low 80's into the mid to upper 90's within that week, only cooling off to the mid 60's at night, so I know everybody is hot. They have shade, water, and I lightly wet down a portion of the run. No standing water because of the sandy loam. I have even given them some frozen corn on the cob, which they really like.
4. I also changed their feed from medicated to non medicated. It has only been for a couple days. I just picked up a new bag of medicated and switched them back.
5. I have not had any chickens before this, but we have wild turkeys and other wild birds/animals all over out here. The coop is behind our house (we live out in the country) and we always have deer and turkeys out there.
6. Some watery, chestnut colored (best way I can describe it) poop. Not entirely sure who it is from.
So, I am wondering if it is a case of Coccidosis, if it is from the heat, or something else entirely! She does seem to be eating and drinking, but I wonder if I should separate her and bring her inside to watch her more closely. Should I start them on Cortid (which I just picked up, just in case) or electrolytes (I picked that up, too). I am new to chickens and just don't know what I am dealing with, if anything.
Please help!
