9-week-old pullet started crowing...

Yup.

The dominant roo will usually have a redder comb than the other roos. If he is removed, someone else will redden up, along with the other rooster characteristics. I suspect your pullet is a roo.

Oh, no. Now you all have me doubting... I had 4 chicks (2 marans, 2 jerseys) and was 90% sure of sex by about 3 or 4 weeks due to feather development. The suspected roos (one of each breed) then sprouted combs, etc. and continued to look more and more roo-ish as the weeks went on. The other two just kept growing and have demure little combs. I got rid of the jersey roo at about 7 weeks and the maran roo at 8 weeks and then...pullet (maybe) starts crowing!

If she turns out to be another roo I will be so upset! It's so hard to get rid of these little guys that I've raised from chickhood! I actually don't mind the noises my chickens make, even the crowing, but DH doesn't like the crowing and is concerned about the neighbors.

I'll try to post some photos this weekend to see if that helps with gender identity. Thanks for your responses.

We have a dozen 10 week old white rocks and one had a yellow small comb while all the others had bright red combs. We took her out of the butcher pen and into the hen house...i swear she is the one crowing over in the hen house!

Here are some photos of the 9-week-old chickens. I think both are pullets but the Maran is crowing every morning. Let me know what you think about the sex of the Maran. You cam access my Flickr photos with this link to see several more photos but I've attached the best 3.

Edited because I figured out how to put the photos in the post.

I agree. I believe what you probably had was a dominant cockerel, the one that was crowing and now that he's gone a subordinate cockerel has stepped up to take his place. My sub. roo barely looked or acted like a rooster until I got re-homed the alpha.
