9 Week Old Runner Duck - poorly?

Sounds like she is hungry for protein but if she is already getting everything you posted I don't know what else you could try but some dried meal worms[protein] or some extra cat Kibble sprinkled over feed. My Runners are strange lil things too but I love them to pieces. Try something like the cat kibble or dried meal worms, good protein source and see if it makes any difference after say 2-4 weeks.
Neurotic lil things. lol

I will, we haven’t built a ramp to the shed yet, so they are lifted in and out, so quite used to being handled!

Thanks for all your kind words.
Merry Christmas when it comes.

Merry Christmas to you and yours also.

Mine have to be walked inside their house before I can pick one up and then I get to snuggle but I don't do it often since it makes them so upset. Mine were hatched and raised by my Muscovy's so I didn't get to have hands on early. That's so neat you can.

I have had 3 ducklings, I received in very bad condition. They were not fed enough, had bumble feet and were missing their down feathers. They were 3 times smaller than my duckling.

All that made them extremely greedy and they ate everything they could get their bills in. They started growing very fast and gain quite some weight in no-time. I was certain I was not giving them enough niacin, and fed them yeast daily. Later on, I have figured out they were no longer deficient, the only issue they had was their weight. Their muscles could not develop fast enough for them to move the same way as they normally would. At one point, they stopped eating slugs (they became too large and had other food they preferred when foraging) and I only fed them oatmeal. I noticed slight improvement and put the remaining duckling on a diet. He fully recovered and reached his adult size. After that he could eat whatever he wanted and had no issues with legs whatsoever. He was slightly obese and fantastic eater - he would come and eat bugs and worms literally from your feet. He was excellent forager.

If your ducks are growing fast or gaining a lot of weight, that could be the problem. Niacin in form of yeast will not harm them, so you can add it as a precaution. Better safe than sorry.

Elfie was slow developmentally till she was about a year old. She caught up and is fine.

Poultry vitamins with electrolytes and probiotics once a week can be helpful. And a little dry cat kibble, too. Or mealworms. Maybe a sprinkling of flax seed meal. Just a tiny bit.

Aw thanks for your reply Amiga.

To be honest duck watch has been interrupted by a puppy emergency.

Our 5 month old Border Collie was sick yesterday morning. She ended up having bowel surgery - linear blockage from her stomach to colon , vet had to make 5 incisions.

Thankfully she made it through the night and we have her home for Christmas, but in a crate for 4-6 weeks!

I will try your diet suggestions when the madness has calmed!

Merry Christmas
