They're restricted to a run at the moment but we do intend to fence in about half an acre and let them range. Hopefully soon. I do throw in a lot of weeds and garden scraps into the run. Maybe I shouldn't while they don't have grit? Can I trawl the local river for small gravel?

depending on your grouds. If its loamy dirt or fine clays, no such materials exist.

But yes, for $90, I'd pick up some rag towels, a hammer, some river rock, a pair of eyes (protection) and start swinging...

I buy a bag of pea gravel from the hardware/landscape store. It has all sizes and is very cheap. I'll also mix it with some construction sand and pour it out on the ground.

You can probably get decomposed granite at a plant nursery, though it may come in bigger quantities than you need. If I recall correctly, most "chicken grit" is granite or flint based.

Thanks for the replies. I'll see what's available at the hardware store. I did grab some stones from the river. Everything here is similar to slate by the looks of it.

i would consider buying a good manually operated grinder. you can make feed from whole grains and grit from bones after you made stock out of them.

Find a river or stream, it will have some gravel near a bend in the stream where the water slows down. Avoid granite due to the chances of having heavy metals in the gravel.
