So we have 6, 1 1/2 week old ducklings and our power just went out! We covered their brooder with towels and blankets and I wrapped two handwarmers up and put it in there with them to snuggle with. The power company said it could be 3 hrs before we get it turned back on....will they be okay until then? They are snuggled and quiet right now.

What is the warmest room in your house>? i would put them in there and close the door, any woodstove? fireplace... in a room with that would be good. The hand warmers are a great idea! those would of massive help.

I wouldn't be adverse personally if they are starting to chill to keeping them on my person.. in my shirt, perhaps cuddled up.. wear a towel of coarse lol

They are in the warmest room right now....we have a fireplace but are currently without firewood (go figure). I am will to snuggle with them but as a last resort :) Should I just keep an eye on the temp of wait to hear them get uncomfortable? I dont want to open up the brooder too much and let what warm air they have out.

Yup, try not to panic!

Like Quackers said, you can always cuddle with them if they start to get loud and cold!

I would try to keep them together as long as you can, though. It will keep them calm, and you would be surprised how well they can keep each other warm! You don't want them to get nervous/panicked, because that's when they'll start having issues and need the electricity.

You could move them to a warmer are, but that could stress them out and cause some of the heat to escape...
But if it's much warmer (like next to a fireplace) it would be worth it.

I'm sure you'll be fine. Remember, 3 hours is probably worst-case-scenario.

Just checked...the brooder is down to 70 and I believe it take 1/2 hr for the handwarmers to get really warm :(

You're right, I am panicking....just keep breathing :) They are really snuggled up and aren't complaining yet.

Okay, power was only out two hours and in hind-sight, I did panic. My apologies :/

Looks like we will be getting a small generator before next week because I would have really been worried if it was 2 day old chicks! The ducks did great, they snuggled with the hand-warmer snuggie and took a nap....they are now running around eating and drinking like nothing.

My husband thinks I'm crazy now! Okay, he thought that before but now he thinks I'm super crazy!

Thanks everyone for your help!

Or just stock up on some firewood? Generators are expensive! Glad you got your power back, I would have panicked as well, they're our babies!

My dear hubby has a generator on his list already....but firewood is another must :D
