A Big "Hello" from Vacaville, California!

Thank you again for the warm welcome. My family and I are getting SO excited for the arrival of our chicks next week!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm sure you all are super egg-cited about the upcoming arrival of your future flock! It's so fun! Be sure to post pics of them once they arrive; BYC sure loves pics!

And best of luck!

Hi! I'm also in Vacaville and am excited the law will be changing soon. I'm waiting until it's all official because I am worried about neighbors.

I'm not sure if I can handle chicks, so I'll be mixing an adult flock from Western Ranch (A silkie and an americauna) and then one or two White leghorns from Animal Place farm animal rescue. That way I'll have room to add more as I get more skilled.

Yeah...I did jump the gun a bit. I was told it was official and watched the board meeting where it was approved. Basically what I have heard is that the current proposed plans for the backyard chickens will stay...but they were ironing out details on rabbits that were also being combined into the city code. I've been told there is nothing to worry about now...just make sure you have at least a 6,000 sq. ft. lot and keep your coop clean. There are TONS of coops now in Vacaville and coops being sold all over the place. There is also a Facebook page of many of those currently with chickens within the city.

Personally, I would think long and hard about going with adult chickens. If you have children or are looking for "pet chickens" I would start from chicks. The process has been wonderful and my chicks have been extreamely healthy. They are bonded to the family now...follow the kids around and I guess my beard has become their surrogate mother hen when they are not in the brooder.
