Hi everyone. My son and I started our quest to be chicken caregivers today and we are very excited. We plan on getting 3 chicks to start. I have a ton of questions but will start with what is first...I am excited about building a coop but need advice on what to build. We have plenty of space - 2.15 acres, but live in SE Minnesota where it gets a bit nippy in winter as you may know. I have looked at plans for flip-lid small coops, larger coops with a full size door and tractors. i have the time and basic skills to build anything so what to you all think?
Thanks and it's nice to be here!

Hello and welcome! I live in Milaca, MN. I built a coop/barn last year and am more than happy how it is working out. It is 16x24' with a loft to boot. I provided nearly all the labor and planned it out myself. The whole thing cost less than 1000 bucks. I made the lumber from trees on my property. Made my own concrete from scratch with a mixer. Siding and roofing was used steel roofing from a salvage yard. My BYC pages has the whole story step by step if you care to look. PM me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! Tackyrama, THAT is a nice building - you must feel very satisfied when you look at it. i will be builing something about 1/40th the size due to factors including, but not limited to, local ordinances, neighbors and my lovely wife - we are going to get 3 chicks and I hope to eek that out to 5 or 6 later. I like the little tractor one of the members made (Cluckingham Palace) as I could move it around the yard and on and off my large veg garden. I would build a detachable run too. My biggest question right now is would that tactor (more like a small coop on wheels) be insulated enough for a Minnesota winter? I could hook up power if needed.
Thanks all1
